Trude, the world largest TBM with a diameter of 14.2 m, broke through safely and inch-perfect in Hamburg Othmarschen on 2nd March 2002 after driving 2,561 metres underground. The 4th Tube of the River Elbe Crossing Tunnel was completed in two years and five months. Trude's breakthrough marked a new milestone in tunnel construction.

A specially developed membrane system provided the necessary level of safety during the four shield launches.

Two Herrenknecht shields successfully accomplished their mission in the Zurich-Thalwil core project of the Bahn 2000 (Railway 2000) project (Zimmerberg Base Tunnel). In March 1999, the mixshield TBM (Ø 12.36 m) launched from contract section 2.01. On the 2.7 km route, ca. 2,000 m was through freshwater molasse and ca. 700 m through soft mixed ground (crushed stone and deposits). The mix shield was equipped to drive through rock and soft mixed ground.

The TBM S-127 Socatop was built to bore the A86 motorway tunnel in Paris. The project was split up into two sections, VL 1 and VL 2, each approx. 5 km long. The TBM used was an adjustable mixshield enabling changeovers between bentonite (slurry), EPB or semi-open mode, depending on the geology the machine could be easily converted from EPB to slurry mode and vice versa within two days.

An AVN 2000D microtunnelling system, specifically developed for this project, drove a protective pipe for an oil pipeline under the 600 m-wide river Newa close to St. Petersburg. The remote controlled high-tech tunnelling system excavated 775 m under the river to reach the reception shaft inch-perfect on the other bank.

To the east of London, two 2,500 m-long railway tunnels were constructed as part of the CTRL (Channel Tunnel Rail Link) project. As from 2007, the single track tunnels will link the British capital with the Eurotunnel (Channel Tunnel), thus shortening the travel time between London and Paris to 2 hours and 15 minutes.
