Tunneling

Below a depth of 40 metres (which equals 4.0 bars over pressure) workers enter a zone where it is no longer effective to carry out compressed air work under conventional conditions. However, because the next generation of tunnels will be longer and deeper than anything we have at present, it can only be a matter of time and opportunity before divers start playing a key role in hyperbaric work.

100th anniversary of the Old River Elbe Tunnel – Tunneling in Hamburg

On 7 September1911, the St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel was opened. The "pedestrian tunnel”, took the shipyard and dock workers faster and safer to the South Bank of the River Elbe. With its lifts for pedestrians and vehicles, the tunnel is among the "Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks in Germany” today. On the occasion of its completion 100 years ago, the Museum of Work tells the story of the "underworld in Hamburg”, the story of the planning and construction of tunnels and its consequences for the urban development.
